Gluecifer - Head to Head Boredom

Actually a compilation released in America collecting the Gods Chosen Dealer single and the Dick Disguised as Pussy EP, Head to Head Boredom, further fleshed out with some extra live tracks, makes for a brilliantly corrosive collection of '90s Scandinavian rock & roll insanity. It's a great way to pick up the band's earliest efforts in one handy spot, and shows that right from the start, Gluecifer were not out to mess around. Biff Malibu sounds like he's out to simultaneously yell, sneer, and sass his way through all of rock's amped-up history, and unsurprisingly the band as whole are right there with him. The mix is noticeably biased towards the trebly end, in classic punk rock style, and likely enough that's just the way the group wanted it. If they got even better and more on the verge of sheer psychosis in later years, the fuse was already well lit and burning. "Gods Chosen Dealer" is one heck of a way to begin, as perfect a Ramones/Stooges/Motorhead fusion there's ever been, Malibu's Stiv Bators-gone-to-hell-on-speed whine the icing on the cake. As for the Dick Disguised as Pussy tracks, there's just a little room to breathe and strut here, and as a result it's even more manically appealing. "Head to Head Boredom" takes the "ain't nothin' to do" ethos of classic American punk to an even more extreme level, and Lord knows Captain Poon knows how to create a smoking guitar solo and make it work. Everybody throws in just what's needed and that little bit more to make it special. The rhythm section whips out subtle tempo changes for variety and makes it work, Poon invokes the spirit of total and utter RAWK, and more than once the live wire Malibu overmodulates the tape just by his shouting.
